The breaking news about windows 7 is that it is very fast, efficient & reliable. The first thing that you feel when starting up Windows 7 is his speed: it not only loads much faster from the moment you press the power button, but it wakes instantly from sleep. No longer will you be left drumming your fingers while waiting for “Resuming Windows” to stop scrolling across your screen. i think it is great news of windows 7.

This is, of course, a feature that Apple owners have enjoyed for years, and there is more than a tang of Apple about the new Windows 7 desktop as well. Like the Dock in Apple’s OS X, the bottom bar on the Windows screen now displays open applications and favourite programs together, in a line running across the screen. You can pin new programmes here, re-order them in order of preference, or remove them from the bar without removing them from your system. Other Apple-like features include instant search for files and folders on your PC.

One particularly neat feature is that hovering over an open programme offers a mini-snapshot of the open screen. If, for example, you have eight windows open in Internet Explorer, all eight will be previewed and you can roll along to pick out the one you want.

After a few hours of use, users may notice that they feel slightly less harassed than before by the Windows experience. This is because the number of irritating dialogue boxes, reminding you of updates, security alerts, new software or network information has been cut drastically. Wireless internet connection, for instance, is now a one rather than three-click affair.

The new Windows also feels noticeably more snappy than its predecessor, Vista. Microsoft has trimmed a lot of the fat from its coding to produce a system that will work on all current computing devices, from the largest desktop to the smallest notebook. That is no mean feat, when you consider that the company must ensure that its products work with equipment made by about 17,000 manufacturers worldwide.

Other new features that Microsoft is keen to promote include touch-screen computing, which Windows 7 supports out of the box. However, whether touch-screen PCs will take off in the same way as touch-screen phones is still uncertain, so this feature of Windows 7 may for many users remain a dormant extra.

There is a tang of Apple about the new Windows 7 desktop

Steve Ballmer aims to take PC users into the cloud with Windows 7

Talking of dormant extras, Windows Media Center gets a boost for the UK with the introduction of a Sky Player channel, featuring programmes from Sky’s satellite channels. Watching live TV will cost extra, as Sky, the satellite operator 39.1 per cent owned by News Corporation, parent company of The Times, does not want to damage its own multi-room subscriber base. Curiously, Microsoft’s own UK video portal, with its library of BBC classics, does not get a look-in.

So, the Windows 7 experience is, so far, largely positive, certainly compared with the cluttered Vista. It looks clean, works quickly, and gets out of the way, as a good operating system should.

But there are some caveats. Windows 7 is offered in a variety of flavours, which are apt to confuse as much as enthuse, and range in price from about £50 to about £180. The base Starter pack designed for netbooks, comes without many of the web-based features you bought a netbook for in the first place. To get these, you will need Home Premium or Ultimate, at extra cost. Owners of Vista Premium should be aware that they need to buy Windows 7 Premium for all their features to transfer.

Also, the system comes supplied on two discs: one for 32-bit computers; one for 64-bit machines. If only Microsoft could have taken another leaf out of the Apple book here: its latest OS comes on only one disc and installs the optimum version automatically.

The latest news about Microsoft Windows 7 is that he Breaks the all sales record on his launch.

The latest news about Microsoft Windows 7 is that he Breaks the all sales record on his launch.

The online retailer Amazon said that it was the “biggest grossing pre-order product of all time”, having overtaken the likes of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Nintendo’s Wii.

Speaking at the launch of Windows 7 yesterday, Jeremy Fennell, Category Director at DSGi, which owns Dixons, Currys and PC World, said: “We have sold more copies of Windows 7 in three weeks on pre-order than Vista sold in its first year.”

At midnight, queues could be seen outside stores as computers users got ready to upgrade their PCs to the new system as soon as possible.

The software is intended to replace Vista, considered by many in the industry to be a failure. Microsoft have said that the latest operating system will be faster and less cluttered than previous versions of Microsoft Windows.

The world’s largest software company, which powers more than 90 percent of personal computers, has received good reviews for the new operating system, which it hopes will grab back the impetus in new technology from rivals Apple and Google.

“It’s the first really significant release of Windows in a decade,” said analyst Brendan Barnicle of Pacific Crest Securities. “Given the missteps around Vista, people really questioned Microsoft’s relevance in the technology space. So this is a critical first step for Microsoft regaining that credibility.”

The Home Premium version of the software will cost £79.99 until next year, when it will be priced at £99.99. The full version costs £149.99.

Retailers, such as DSGi, are also believed to be stocking up on USB-powered DVD drives for use with netbooks, since Windows 7 is supplied on DVDs and most netbooks do not have a built-in DVD drive.

Although the operating system is also available to purchase as a direct download, most users prefer to keep a physical copy. In the United States, Windows 7 is also being sold on a USB flash drive for netbook owners, but Microsoft declined to reveal whether we in the UK would be given the same option.

That seemed to be the overriding question Thursday as Microsoft officially took the wraps off its latest operating system, much of which was already public knowledge, with more than 8 million testers having used it since January.

Microsoft Windows 7 latest news:

The latest news about Microsoft windows 7 released and tech sector into a new era to explore and creates the software for windows 7.

Can Windows 7 repair Microsoft Corp.’s reputation and trigger enough sales to pull the technology sector out of its financial funk?

That seemed to be the overriding question Thursday as Microsoft officially took the wraps off its latest operating system, much of which was already public knowledge, with more than 8 million testers having used it since January.

In the past, thousands of technology companies could count on each release of a new Windows operating system to deliver its own economic stimulus: Millions of consumers would rush out to buy faster computers and companies would splurge on more powerful computer systems.

This time, the recession has pulled the plug on spending, leaving many to wonder how much of a jolt Windows 7 can deliver to a beleaguered sector.

“Windows 7 represents a significant opportunity for many companies,” said Richard Shim, an analyst with technology research firm IDC, “but it’s coming at a time when the industry is struggling.” IDC predicted that global PC sales in 2009 would be flat at best.

Much rides on the success of Windows 7.

Microsoft is counting on the new operating system to lift its sales, which fell last fiscal year for the first time since the company went public in 1986.

Computer makers and software companies are praying that Windows 7 will set off a wave of demand for their products and services. Even consumer electronics companies see Windows 7-based computers as a way to make their devices more desirable as gateways for on-demand entertainment programs.

The operating system “is something that the entire industry has been waiting for,” said Roger Kay, an analyst with Endpoint Technologies who has done consulting for Microsoft. “With almost all corporate buying of technology on hold for the past year, Windows 7 finally gives them something they can sink their teeth into.”

<img title="windows 7 launches" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_2ix3DxfiCgw/SuFmT8IC2HI/AAAAAAAAALE/aaEVyYu5AsE/Windows%207.jpg" alt="Employees of Microsofts first store greet their customers in Scottsdale, Ariz.. The same day, Microsoft launched Windows 7, its first new operating system since Windows Vista got its bumpy start in 2006. (Laura Segall / Getty Images / October 22, 2009)

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s boisterous chief executive, certainly hoped so.

“Today is an important day for the computer industry, certainly for Microsoft and, I hope, perhaps even most importantly, for all of the customers around the world,” Ballmer said during the company’s event.

According to a study conducted by IDC and paid for by Microsoft, for every dollar the Redmond, Wash., company generates by selling Windows 7, other companies stand to reap more than $18.50 by selling products and services related to the operating system.

Windows 7 is pivotal to Microsoft’s finances. Last fiscal year, for example, Microsoft’s client division, which includes Windows, brought in 25% of the company’s revenue but accounted for 53% of its profit.

Windows 7 is also an attempt to repair Microsoft’s reputation, which was badly damaged by the launch of its last operating system, Windows Vista, in 2006. Vista proved too large for many computers to handle, and it didn’t work with many devices right away, including some printers and cameras.

Many of those issues were resolved, but companies still shied away from upgrading their computers to Vista and stuck with Microsoft’s previous operating system, XP, which was launched in 2001. Consequently, computers running XP outnumber those running Vista by four to three, according to IDC.

Now, however, many of those computers are getting old, and Microsoft is hoping that Windows 7 will give buyers an excuse to spring for a new machine.

Will it work?

“There were more than 700 people lined up outside the Microsoft store in Scottsdale when it opened up this morning,” said Katherine Egbert, an analyst with Jefferies & Co., referring to Thursday’s debut in Arizona of Microsoft’s first retail store. Some queued up the night before, bringing doughnuts, pizza and Microsoft Xbox 360 game consoles to pass the time.

“I’d say that’s pretty good demand and pretty good interest,” Egbert said.

Microsoft Windows 7 Help on twitter! @MicrosoftHelps?

Microsoft Windows 7 direct technical help available on twitter now!

@MicrosoftHelps?

Real time monitoring for help and support from Microsoft? Support for OEM editions of Windows and Office direct from Redmond? Support for people with pirated copies of Microsoft software? Real time support for Microsoft launched newly operating system windows 7.

If this all seems too good to be true then we’ll sadly just have to wait and see, but Microsoft have now launched a new Twitter account @MicrosoftHelps where they say they’ll monitor support and customer experience requests in real time (office hours presumably) and help people out.

This is the latest in a barrage of recently launched new help and support websites from the Redmond giant including Microsoft Answers and the FixIt website.

I personally find it somewhat ironic that they’re doing it now, when Windows 7 is their most stable operating system ever, and the one that will, if anything, require the least support. Any help and support can only be a good thing though.

How much help can be provided in 140 characters is open to question but I can only applaud Microsoft’s decision to offer this service.

So if you have a Twitter account, if nobody else can help and if you can find them… @MicrosoftHelps stands ready to listen.
